“HR is not your friend” – HR professionals do not have to be your friend to do these critical things

In my role as an HR professional, I do not have to be your friend to:

– care

– take time to listen

– show empathy

– help you manage conflict

– be your advocate

– support your career advancement based on your performance and your qualifications

– provide sound advice to assist you both personally and professionally

– do my part to promote a workplace culture that values fairness and equity

– look after your safety in the workplace

Yes, the HR function is integral to the achievement of corporate goals. This really is the other side of the same coin, it is not a separate issue.

The role of HR is much more complex than simply taking care of one party (the employer) in the employment relationship. It is a relationship after all, there are needs, rights, terms, conditions and obligations on both sides. Naturally, conflict will arise, my aim is to have as many win-win outcomes as I can, both parties winning, this is not always possible, however, what is clear is that if only one party wins and the other loses on a consistent basis, that relationship will break down. HR is in the business of risk management, so we are mindful of this and this would guide our actions.

It is best to move away from the “us” versus “them” mentality and narrative. Employers need the support of employees if their businesses are to survive and employees need the business to do well and to remain a going concern so that they can remain employed. I see much room for collaboration here, and for building and maintaining genuine and strong work relationships in the interest of all involved.
